VOLMET (French
- "flying weather") are broadcasts containing
meteorological information for aircraft in flight.
They
include TAF (Terminal Aerodrome Forecast), SIGMET (Significant
Meteorological Information), and METAR (Meteorological
Terminal Aviation Routine).
Automated broadcasts typically recite:
HF VOLMETs generally cover a large geographical area
and are intercepted by flight crews whilst en-route
to an area and out of VHF ATIS (Automatic Terminal Information Service)
broadcast range. ATIS are broadcast by individual airports containing
specific local airport data.
The information received is used to determine possible flight route
deviations by evaluating upcoming weather conditions along their flight
route, which are out of aircraft weather radar range.
Frequencies are in KHz, 2K80J3E (USB). Broadcast durations are approximately 5 minutes (hour times are UTC).
